Spatium Medical B.V. raises 5 million to bring smart insufflation technology to operating rooms in europe and the United States
Venture Challenge alumnus of the spring edition 2023, Spatium Medical B.V., has successfully closed a €5 million funding round. This round includes new investors InnovationQuarter and DEMCON INVESTMENTS Fund, as well as support from existing investors: Van Herk Groep Ventures and Swanbridge Capital. The financing round was made possible by the Innovation Credit from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO)RVO).
Since the 1990s, the number of laparoscopic surgeries has increased significantly. During such surgeries, pressurized CO2 gas is used to create a working space for the surgeon. However, this is not entirely without consequences. Too much pressure can lead to pain and discomfort for the patient, a longer recovery time and other complications. Spatium Medical offers a solution for this with their innovation that applies smart, personalized insufflation during laparoscopy.
The unique features of Spatium Medical’s product enable the surgeon to select the right pressure for each patient, reducing strain and shortening recovery time.
Willem Mees van der Bijl, CEO of Spatium Medical: “The collaboration between the new and existing investors, the team at the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and the Spatium Medical team has been invaluable. Not only for closing this important financing round, but also for sharing knowledge and expertise. This enables us to bring this innovative technology, developed here in Rotterdam, to a point where it will become the new standard for minimally invasive surgery worldwide. Very exciting!”
Two years ago, InnovationQuarter helped the company with an investment from the early stage financing fund UNIIQ - Finance for the Future. This enabled the company to complete the first test phases and prepare their product for subsequent investment rounds.
Nina S., Investment Manager at InnovationQuarter is looking forward to further supporting Spatium Medical in advancing their groundbreaking technology: “We are excited to see Spatium Medical’s vision come to life as they develop a technology that can dramatically improve patient recovery times and surgical safety. This is exactly the type of innovation that InnovationQuarter likes to support. And a great example of how our different funds align with the different growth stages of a company.”
